What if I can’t be hypnotized?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we all go into and out of everyday. If a person wants to go into hypnosis with a hypnotherapist, they will. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. All one needs to do is follow along with their hypnotherapist into a relaxed state of mind and body. A heightened state of awareness is then achieved where the conscious mind observes the subconscious mind coming forward.

Will I be vulnerable to suggestions I would not want or made to do things I would not want to do?

We have all seen people participating in stage shows doing embarrassing things that make us laugh…but that is just what it is…ENTERTAINMENT!! It is fun for those who want to participate and for those who watch. We all have built in filters and walls that govern what moves into and out of our minds. Hypnotherapy at McKay Healing Arts is client-centered. It is about what you want to achieve in your life. You, the client, identify your desired outcome and the content of all suggestions used by the hypnotherapist to help move you there. The client holds the answers.

What does it feel like to be in hypnosis?

The physical feelings while in hypnosis vary from person to person and from experience to experience. Generally, there is a deep sense of relaxation of mind and body. Some people feel a sense of heaviness, some of lightness; it is a very individual experience. There can be sensations of tingling or slight numbness somewhere in the body; or not. But almost universally, clients report a very pleasant feeling of peace and calm.

Will I remember what happens in a session?

The content of your session is completely available to your conscious mind if it chooses to reflect. But, not only will you remember the parts that you wish to in your conscious mind; you will have all of the feelings of relaxation, peace, calm and resolution that you experienced in the session stored in the subconscious mind; never forgotten.

What can hypnotherapy be used for?

Learn and condition the relaxation response

Control stress and anxiety

Build self-confidence

Increase focus and motivation

Stop smoking

Release weight

Break unwanted habits

Improve athletic performance

Release blocks from the past

Clear fears/phobias

Unleash blocked or hidden potential

Support Fertility

Improve/enhance relationships

And More…

What can I expect in a first session?

There is brief paperwork to fill out informing your hypnotherapist of any health related concerns and gaining your consent to proceed with the session which is held in complete confidence. The two of you then discuss the reason for your visit and what you wish to accomplish. The process of hypnosis is explained and any questions you have are answered. You are reminded that you are completely in control of the session before you are guided into the place where your solutions are discovered and your future begins!

How can massage benefit me?

Massage has been used to promote health for thousands of years. Only recently has its use become widespread among the general public and in conjunction with the western medical community. Research has documented the effectiveness of massage in relieving the symptoms of conditions such as:

TMJ

Headache

Low back pain

Fibromyalgia

Sports injury

Stress

Depression

Massage is also being recognized and utilized for recuperative and palliative care; offering relief post-operatively, and in conjunction with treatment for cancer and severe burns. Receiving massage improves circulation, lowers heart rate, …(from massage brochure)

What can I expect during a massage?

When you arrive for your massage, you can expect to fill out a short form regarding your health history so that your massage therapist can fully address your individual needs. Be sure to identify any sensitivity you might have to ingredients that could be included in lotions, or oils such as nuts or herbs.

Your massage will take place on a padded table in a quiet room with low lighting to allow for maximum relaxation. Clean sheets, blankets, and pillows will be used to cover your body and accommodate any need you might have for special propping.

Your therapist will plan to do a full body massage unless you have discussed focusing on only a particular area. You will remain covered except for the area being massaged. During your massage, you will act as your own advocate letting the therapist know about any needs regarding temperature, the pressure being used, whether you wish to converse or be quiet, or any discomfort you might experience during the course of your session.

Following your massage, you will be given privacy to slowly get off of the table and get dressed. Your therapist will inform you of any impressions they have gained about your musculo-skeletal system and make recommendations for follow up sessions, self-care, and/or referral to other healthcare providers (ie; acupuncturist, hypnotherapist, chiropractor, M.D., PT, etc.) for maximum health or recovery.

Is there anything I should do in preparation for my massage?

There is nothing you have to do to prepare for a massage, but there are suggestions that can help maximize your experience if they are available to you. Have in mind any questions you might have for your massage therapist that will help you feel at ease. Pay attention to the time around your scheduled massage. Do not eat just before your appointment. Your body will relax more easily and your food will digest more comfortably if you have allowed time for this process. Arriving a little early, so as not to feel rushed, will also assist your body in relaxing. Try to leave some time open following your massage to notice and enjoy the changes you feel in your body and your mind. Your muscles have memory, and this is a feeling and condition you will definitely want them to retain! Though your therapist will offer you water immediately following your session, plan to have water available to rehydrate in the hours ahead.

What types of massage are offered at McKay Healing Arts?

At McKay Healing Arts we offer an array of bodywork therapies to address our clients’ needs. Click here for a brief description of each.

How do I know which type of massage I need?

The Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapists (LMBT) at McKay Healing Arts have years of experience and extensive training in their field. As with most massage therapists, they combine techniques from a variety of styles to optimize results. As a general rule, Swedish massage serves as a great first massage experience, to become familiar with the process, the touch, and feelings of deep relaxation. Myofascial and neuromuscular massage are types of “deep tissue” massage that address the deeper lying muscles in specific ways to increase the health and efficiency of both muscle and joints. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) may be an appropriate choice for anyone who is recuperating from the trauma of an accident or surgery, an unexplained pain syndrome, or issue involving emotional upheaval.

Is Acupuncture Covered By Insurance?

In NC, most insurance plans do not cover acupuncture. However, because some policies do offer coverage, you should check with your insurance provider to determine whether and to what extent acupuncture would be covered. Currently, McKay Healing Arts does not file insurance, but if you do have a policy that covers acupuncture, the necessary forms can be provided for you to submit for reimbursement.

More companies than ever are offering their employees the benefit of a Health Savings Accounts. Almost all HSA’s include acupuncture and massage in their plans. Check with your employer.

How should I prepare for my Initial Acupuncture Consult/Treatment?

At McKay Healing Arts, free consults are offered for all of our services. When scheduling a consultation for acupuncture, come prepared to receive a first treatment (though not required) as the majority of our clients choose to do. After talking with our professionals, most people are excited to get started right away. Please request or download our client intake forms to fill out at home, or arrive 10-15 minutes before your appointment to complete the paperwork in preparation for your consult/treatment.

Recommended, but not required are casual, comfortable clothing, and a list of current prescription medications and/or natural supplements. Our acupuncturists recommend that you do not have a first treatment on an empty stomach. Follow your normal regimen with medications and supplements.

Any previous test results, such as lab testing, MRI, X-ray, will prove informative at your next visit but is not required initially.

How Many Treatments Will I Need/How Often?

Acupuncture is holistic in nature and therefore treatments are based on each individual’s need. One condition might be treated effectively with only one visit, while another takes time for the body’s systems to strengthen and balance or for muscle memory to occur. Your acupuncturist will give you an idea of frequency and number of visits after your first treatment. Your response in the initial treatment will help to make that determination, as will the severity of your symptoms and the length of the history of the problem.

A general rule of thumb for many imbalances is once per week for 4 to 6 weeks with an evaluation to determine next steps at that time.

After Receiving Acupuncture, What Can I Expect?

Acupuncture is very relaxing, as it releases endorphins or “the feel good” chemicals of the brain. Because deep relaxation is a contributor to healing, it is good idea to build in some time after your treatment to maximize these effects. Most people are able to resume regular activities like driving or returning to work, but adopting a little slower pace immediately after your treatment can help the body and/or mind, make the changes you are seeking.

Excerpt from Encore Magazine’s “Best of Wilmington” 2012:

Modern medicine can be as much a baffling experience as a helpful one. Just like the many medicines we can be treated with to fix sinuses or cholesterol, there are alternative remedies many stand behind which have the same effects. McKay Healing Arts is here to help folks find better and supplemental ways to improve their health across various platforms.

McKay has been operating in Wilmington for 11 years now, healing the community and approaching the mind-body-spirit tableau in a less stringent, boxed-in form. “In our field, most practitioners are independent business owners who have a strong desire to help others achieve balance and well-being (health) through the most natural means possible,” co-owner Debra Collins says. “Many people come to us after they have exhausted traditional approaches to illness or pain.”

McKay Healing Arts services various clientele, whether they are having fertility issues, are in need of acupuncture or massage, want to experiment with herbs and even hypnotherapy. By focusing on the body’s most innate way of healing, Collins and owner Leon McKay are putting control back into the patient’s hands.

“At McKay Healing Arts, we work as an integrated team,” Collins says. “We rely on each other’s knowledge and skill to create a high rate of success for our clients who take advantage of our complementary disciplines.”

By thinking with their hearts and feeling with their heads-a motto the company stands by-the practitioners here take notice of what locals want. Thus, winning the coveted “e” annually means the community is giving their stamp of approval, which means the world to Collins and McKay.

“They are the people we serve!” Collins states. “We increasingly work with clients who are under the care of local M.D.’s, and we have more direct referrals from them now than in the past, but we are far from the mark on being recognized as legitimate adjuncts to treatment, let alone working together to achieve results. We continue to encourage clients to let their doctors know that they are using our services and inform them of the results they are having.”

In upcoming months, McKay and company hope to offer Saturday acupuncture and put emphasis on their Garden Studio space for educational workshops and programs. They’ve also found success in Saturday massage hours, along with their weekly, inexpensive acupuncture sessions to help alleviate moderate pain and stress relief; better yet, no appointment is necessary. They’re building upon that “Urgent Care” model, where clients are serviced immediately if suffering from acute pain.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teaches meditation and gentle yoga to cultivate awareness and reduce stress. MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and is taught at locations worldwide, including Duke Integrative Medicine. MBSR was created on the foundation of the ancient practice of mindfulness, which encourages being fully present in our lives with greater peace and ease. People take an MBSR course for reasons that include stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, GI distress, chronic illness, fatigue, heart disease, insomnia, or grief/loss. It is a practice that is useful for stress reduction, a greater sense of well-being, and enhanced creativity. The class is a compliment to, not a substitute for, medical and psychological treatment.

Jennifer Johnson is a mindfullness-based psychotherapist and wellness coach in Wilmington, NC. She coaches people to live mindfully, be well, and live their creative potential.
