Acupuncture FAQs

Q Is Acupuncture Covered By Insurance?

In NC, most insurance plans do not cover acupuncture. However, because some policies do offer coverage, you should check with your insurance provider to determine whether and to what extent acupuncture would be covered. Currently, McKay Healing Arts does not file insurance, but if you do have a policy that covers acupuncture, the necessary forms can be provided for you to submit for reimbursement.

More companies than ever are offering their employees the benefit of a Health Savings Accounts. Almost all HSA’s include acupuncture and massage in their plans. Check with your employer.

Q How should I prepare for my Initial Acupuncture Consult/Treatment?

At McKay Healing Arts, free consults are offered for all of our services. When scheduling a consultation for acupuncture, come prepared to receive a first treatment (though not required) as the majority of our clients choose to do. After talking with our professionals, most people are excited to get started right away. Please request or download our client intake forms to fill out at home, or arrive 10-15 minutes before your appointment to complete the paperwork in preparation for your consult/treatment.

Recommended, but not required are casual, comfortable clothing, and a list of current prescription medications and/or natural supplements. Our acupuncturists recommend that you do not have a first treatment on an empty stomach. Follow your normal regimen with medications and supplements.

Any previous test results, such as lab testing, MRI, X-ray, will prove informative at your next visit but is not required initially.

Q How Many Treatments Will I Need/How Often?

Acupuncture is holistic in nature and therefore treatments are based on each individual’s need. One condition might be treated effectively with only one visit, while another takes time for the body’s systems to strengthen and balance or for muscle memory to occur. Your acupuncturist will give you an idea of frequency and number of visits after your first treatment. Your response in the initial treatment will help to make that determination, as will the severity of your symptoms and the length of the history of the problem.

A general rule of thumb for many imbalances is once per week for 4 to 6 weeks with an evaluation to determine next steps at that time.

Q After Receiving Acupuncture, What Can I Expect?

Acupuncture is very relaxing, as it releases endorphins or “the feel good” chemicals of the brain. Because deep relaxation is a contributor to healing, it is good idea to build in some time after your treatment to maximize these effects. Most people are able to resume regular activities like driving or returning to work, but adopting a little slower pace immediately after your treatment can help the body and/or mind, make the changes you are seeking.
